Thermogravimetric analysers for testing in extreme conditions

Thermogravimetric analysers from Rubotherm can monitor mass changes of samples at very high pressures and in corrosive or toxic atmospheres. Available from exclusive UK representatives Merrow Scientific, the DynTHERM instruments can produce heating rates as high as 8000 K/min.

The key to the instruments’ performance is their patented magnetic coupling and control system, which allows the high precision balance to be located in a separate chamber from the sample. With conventional instruments a physical link between the sample and balance limits the range of application to pressures of typically 20 bar. However, DynTHERM instruments can operate as high as 150 bar or 1550 deg C.

Typical applications include high temperature corrosion testing in the offshore industry, coal and biomass gasification, pyrolysis studies and getter materials testing.

The innovative design enables a single sample to be continuously weighed over time while held at a specified pressure and temperature. This is more accurate, safer and easier than measuring corrosion with traditional static pressure vessels, where multiple samples have to be used and the vessel needs to be repeatedly depressurised, cooled and unbolted so that a sample can be removed at intervals for external weighing.

The analysers are available in low or high pressure models. The DynTHERM LP range operate between vacuum and atmospheric pressure, and can be fitted with Rubotherm’s FlexiDOSE gas and vapour dosing and mixing devices.

The DynTHERM HP range consists of three models, with maximum pressures ranging from 50 to 150 bar and temperatures up to 1200 deg C. Sample loading is as easy as with standard instruments thanks to the motor assisted movement of the balance in a convenient loading position.

Other members of the Rubotherm range of gravimetric analysers are also available from Merrow Scientific. Operating as high as 2000 bar or 2000 deg C, they have a wide range of applications including measurement of gas sorption, diffusion, corrosion, decomposition etc.
