Press Release

Novel gas-liquid contactor produces highly efficient mixing

A high efficiency gas-liquid contactor is now available in the UK from Merrow Scientific. Ideal for use in a wide range of process engineering applications, the downflow gas contactor from WRK Design & Services uses a novel design to produce intense mixing and rapid surface renewal.

In the co-current reactor, the high velocity liquid jet inlet stream generates intense shear, producing a vigorously agitated gas-liquid dispersion in the upper section of the fully flooded column. This shear and turbulence cause the break up of any gas pocket at the inlet and produce an extremely high interfacial area in a small operating volume.

“The DGC reactor is one of the most efficient mass transfer devices available for contacting liquids and gases,” according to Ben Proudlove, managing director of Merrow Scientific.

The novel design has a smaller operating volume than comparable equipment and no internal moving parts. It offers improved reaction times, lower power consumption, and reduced capital and operating costs.

Suitable for batch, semi-continuous or continuous mode operation, the DGC reactor has a high tolerance to particle content and is inherently safe. The design can be easily scaled up without loss in efficiency.

Many process industries require gas-liquid contacting in a wide range of applications, including absorption, stripping, flotation, ozone treatment, microbubble generation, oxidation, hydrogenation, effluent treatment, fermentation and mineral separation.

The reactor was developed by Birmingham-based WRK from a novel concept of contacting a continuous liquid phase with a dispersed gas phase through a specially designed column inlet.
