Gravimetric Sorption

Gravimetric Sorption Measurement for High Pressure and High Temperature Applications

These systems from Rubotherm (supplied in the UK by Merrow Scientific) allow gravimetric studies to be carried out while subjecting samples to vapours or gases in environments of pressures up to 2000bar, up to 2000degC and corrosive environments (e.g. Supercritical CO2)

Also the fact that we can calibrate and tare the high precision balance during sample analysis means the Rubotherm's performance is second to none.  Applications such as hydrogen storage where mass change due to hydrogen sorption is very low are accurately measured on a Rubotherm system where we can remove any ambiguity from balance drift or buoyancy.

Don't let your research be limited by the specification of your instrument!!!!!

Glass Rubotherm System

Merrow Scientific are the UK partner for Rubotherm supplying their patented magnetic suspension balance in the UK and Ireland.  The system is used for a wide variety of applications where a sample needs to be continuously weighted as vapours or gases (or a mixture) are dosed over it in a variety of environments.  There is currently lots of interest in using these systems for hydrogen storage in porous solids (for new fuel research), MOF (metal organic framework) sorption studies, corrosion of materials analysis, biomass and coal gasification.

Applications

  • Gas storage (in porous solids, ionic liquids etc)
  • Adsorption isotherms and kinetics
  • Corrosion studies
  • Gasification processes (of coal, biomass etc)
  • Filter material testing
  • Decomposition measurement
  • Surface area and porosity
  • Chemisorption (TPD, TPR etc)
  • Gas and liquid density measurement under pressure

Benefits of Rubotherm Magnetic Suspension Balance Benefits

Conventional gravimetric systems have a direct connection between the sample and the high precision balance.  This is fine for certain applications, but once you reach a certain pressure (typically about 20-30bar) or temperature or wish to use a corrosive type environment (e.g. supercriticial CO2 extraction research) then it is difficult/impossible to protect the balance.

The Rubotherm system uses a patented magnetic suspension coupling and control system that means the sample is suspended inside a closed reactor while the high precision balance is in a separate chamber.

This means there are the following benefits:

  • High pressures - research can be run in pressures up to 2000bar
  • High temperatures - up to 2000degC
  • Research using corrosive environments
  • Balance can be tared during long term testing to avoid any influence of natural balance drift of high precision balance
  • Gas mixture density can be measured - for analysis purposes and also buoyancy calculations

Systems Example Rubotherm System

Generally systems are designed to suit the customer's research requirements.  So depending on the pressure and temperature range and the dosing/mixing requirements (e.g. gases and vapours) we will configure a system suited to meet your exact needs.  The system can be modified at a later date or you may have the expertise in house for making your own dosing system.

An example of a typical system can be seen to the right where the research requirements were for a gas and vapour mixing and dosing system (with integrated vapouriser and air bath).
